Wherever we bake in Australia, we bake on unceded Indigenous country.
It’s time that we stand up as representatives of our respective communities to acknowledge and support the traditional owners of the Country on which we bake.
Our mission is for all non-Indigenous bakers and bakeries in Australia to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land we bake on, and to display our respect proudly and loudly so that other communities and industries might follow.
Throughout history bakeries have supported and been supported by the communities that surround them. Bakeries survive wars, many of us thrived during the pandemic as we were able to provide staples like, bread, milk, butter, eggs, flour (and of course the odd treat or two). The beauty of this position is that we are placed perfectly to connect with and influence the community that surrounds us.
As the demand and enthusiasm for artisan baked goods rises so does our ability to support our local communities in ways that others can’t. Let’s take advantage of position and platform to acknowledge and support the people who, for 60,000 + years owned, loved and cared for the land on which we stand, the land where we bake.
Here we have published the recipe for the Aboriginal Flag Biscuits that you can bake and use to raise awareness and funds for charities and organisations who support the Aboriginal and First Nations communities in your area. It couldn’t be easier.
